Swiss-Greek Symposium2012

9-11 September | Zürich, Switzerland

This preparatory meeting gathered experts from the academic field (ETH, University of Patras and University of Athens) on spatial and urban planning, and professionals from the non-academic sector (Transport planners from the City of Patras, representatives of ERGOSE, professionals from Rail Transit in Switzerland etc.).  Despite the harsh socioeconomic conditions in Greece, an integrated approach on spatial planning and infrastructure systems is of central importance, in order to achieve a sustainable development. Greek representatives presented the current situation of the railway connection between Athens- Patras and the potential of the urban development of Patras city. Besides that, Swiss experts presented examples of European railway experience and possibilities of funding, providing useful remarks on Patras case study. The debate followed a collaborative and open process focusing on the great challenges and opportunities of spatial and rail development in Patras and the broader region. Furthermore, this meeting was the base for the organization of the international Joint Seminar Week held in Patras in June 2013.
